In order to prepare its students for responsible duties in business and society, the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration offers practice-oriented bachelor’s and master’s programmes.

Through our teaching, our research and close cooperation with companies and other external partners we create the best conditions for networks with high practical relevance in accordance with our principles as a university of applied sciences.

We want to generate added value (Value Declaration) together with and for all partners of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration through this special orientation around these seven equally important guiding stars:

Highly influenced by internationalisation, digitalization and media, our teaching focuses on capacity building as well as on team and project orientation. All our degree programmes stress the interconnectedness of business/academic aspects and practical media/project work. Due to this students of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration become "ready to act" in their respective specialist fields.

 

Our teaching philosophy is based on the Würzburg Capacity Development Model "ready to act"; it has a strong influence on our degree programmes and is based on the following steps:

  1. Team training
  2. Modern teaching
  3. Reduce-to-the-max know-how
  4. Systematic academic work
  5. Focus on capacities
  6. Effective (project) management

This not only gives our students the opportunity to successfully complete their studies, but the acquisition of practical experience also makes it easier for them to start their careers.

Digitalization

With its digitalization strategy, the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration aims at creating a comprehensive operational framework for sustainable, competence-oriented teaching connected to digitalization. It is the Faculty’s declared objective to follow the FHWS Management’s strategic considerations and to extend as well as deepen the University’s efforts regarding digitalization in the field of university teaching.

As a consequence, the Faculty concentrates on the following strategic targets:

  • Efficient teaching
    This means the percentage of students who can complete their studies within the projected time and without additional time requirements.
  • Quality teaching
    This means didactically and methodologically demanding courses connected to digitalization.

 

People are at the centre of our digitalization strategy. A proficient and critical way of dealing with media will be a central skill for lecturers and students. One of the main aspects is the so called media literacy. Media literacy is the ability to actively use all kinds of media for the communication and action repertoire of people (see Bake, 1997); it is part of the personal and social skills required by the future world of labour. We see it as one of our duties to make a contribution to this.

The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration’s vision for digitalization in the field of university teaching is:

"Innovative, competence-oriented university education for the world of labour of the future."

Research

It is FHWS’s declared objective to further develop its research activities; this mission is embedded in the overall strategy of our University. It is about detecting and systematically developing potentials to optimize the students’ education by connecting academic education and practical application mainly through projects.

Hence, the central topics of the Faculty’s research strategy refer to the research focuses, the necessary research infrastructure, and the connection of applied research and teaching.
Within an ongoing development the following has been or will be realised:

  • The Institute of Applied Logistics Solutions and the Institute for Rescue, Emergency and Disaster Management have been established.
  • A lab cluster has been created that offers perfect conditions in terms of space, media and methodological surroundings for performing research into questions in economics and social sciences connected to designing digital business and life models.
  • We joined the network of international business schools. A working group created as a result will make use of synergy effects of joint international research activities.
  • We adopted a research definition declaring that we
    • create new insights which can be used by society and economy.
    • create visibility and transparency in the process of gaining knowledge and in its results.
    • are geared to the challenges of practice and ensure the transfer of knowledge.
    • increase the quality of teaching by participating in the research process.
    • conduct research with enthusiasm and passion together with our partners

Internationalisation

The challenges of increasing globalization require not only the necessary professional and interdisciplinary skills and competencies, but also an international understanding of the employees in order to master the special challenges of the global market place. By its internationalisation strategy, which was adopted in the summer semester 2016, the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration is supporting the strategic objectives of FHWS to strengthen existing international contacts and to sustainably develop the international orientation of its degree programmes. By implementing the English-taught degree programme International Management, we already achieved to attract not only home students, but also international students for a future internationally-oriented career.

Key components of internationalisation at the Faculty are:

  • Integrating international students into the bachelor's programmes Business Administration, International Management, and Media Management as well as into the master’s programmes Innovation for Small and Medium Enterprises, and Brand and Media Management.
  • Providing university places in all important regions of the world; in this, we take into account FHWS’s strategic partners and give priority to their economic relevance in the global market as well as their general political situation to offer our students the opportunity to acquire intercultural experience in their desired target region.
  • Implementing and further developing the English-taught bachelor's programme International Management towards the X-Model and our TWIN Programmes.
  • Continued expansion of our English-taught MBA programme International Business.
  • Programme accreditation of our bachelor’s and consecutive master’s programmes in accordance with international quality standards and the principles of the Bologna Declaration. This has been achieved by getting accredited by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA). The award of the FIBAA certificate ensures that the programmes meet national and international requirements and standards.
