Bachelor International Management

1. Introduction

The Bachelor programme „International Management“ is integrated in the strategy of the university to offer comparable courses in German and English language. The programme is completely taught in English and it is connected with the German Bachelor Betriebswirtschaft. The focus on International Management is realized with specific courses with an international context.. Its practical orientation fits ideally into the concept of the University of Applied Sciences. Graduates of the programme meet the needs of international oriented small and medium sized companies as well as big corporations.

The targets of the programme are named in § 2 of the study and examination regulations (SPO) of the faculty.
According to the competences defined in the minister for education and cultural affairs conference (KMK) the students shall acquire self, social, technical and methodical competences, which enable them to act responsibly toward businesses and society. In particular, the programme shall provide the ability to support the management in all economic fields and even empower to take over executive functions in international companies (after a professional training on the job). Moreover, students are being prepared for a broader view and to understand economic activities in the context of their social, geopolitical and cultural background. The study programme “International Management” offers a wide range of basic education in the core economic fields and the ability to specify the gained knowledge in majors. Through the integrated internship, students are trained in practical problem solution in the international sphere.
Besides the functional education, students also acquire social, linguistic and intercultural competences. Lectures held in English language as well as an optional theoretical or practical semester abroad, promote students competitiveness on an international job market.

The study programme “International Management” comprises 3.5 years (7 semesters), including 1 practical semester (usually semester 5). Within a modular structure 210 CP (around 30 CP – Credit Points per semester) can be achieved.
The module can be assigned to the following topics:

  • General basics and arts
  • Economic basics
  • Business functions
  • Subject related focuses
  • General studies
  • Main focus

The following spreadsheet shows the credit points and the semester in which the module is offered.
There is no obligation to complete the module in the semester shown in the study plan. In order to the reasons listed below, the adherence to the study plan is highly recommended:

  • The study plan is adjusted to a workload of approximately 30 Credit Points per semester, which equals about 900 hours. Past experiences suggest, that an average student is not able to deal with a higher workload.
  • Modules are built upon.
  • The schedule, which is offered to the students every semester, is based on the study plan. Students are able to join the necessary lectures without collisions, if attended accordingly. Exemptions from the study plan may cause overlaps.
  • Some modules (especially in higher semesters) are only allowed to be studied after passing specific regulations, like a default number of achieved Credit Points or specific subjects, that have to be passed in advance. Further information can be found in the study and examination regulation (SPO).
  • Parts of a focus are only offered once a year.

Credit Points (CP) are the units in which academic success is measured according to the Bologna System. To acquire a Bachelor’s degree, students have to pass 180 – 240 CP. A Master’s degree requires 300 CP.
One Credit Point (CP) reflects a student workload of 30 hours.
One semester is usually scheduled with 30 CP, which means that students face a workload of 900 hours per semester.
The student workload consists of two parts:
Presence Part: Lectures and all other meetings in the University guided by a lecturer. Therefore, the presence part can be referred to as contact time or hours.
Self-study Part: Preparation and post-processing for upcoming lectures. Also the time students need to prepare for presentations, papers and exams.
The presence part is determined through (academic)hours/week during the semester (SWS). One academic hour equals lecture time of 45 min.
One semester is usually 15 weeks.
Therefore, a lecture with two academic hours (SWS) equals a presence part of:
15 lecture week’s × 1.5 hours = 22.5 real time hours
A lecture with 4 SWS means 45 hours

Based on a special bilateral agreement between the study programme International Management and a comparable study programme of a partner university, students spend one year (2 semesters) and earn 60 CP or an equivalent number of Credit Points at the partner universities.

According to the study and examination regulations there is a deadline for taking certain exams. The following deadlines are mandatory:

Semester 2: General Business, Mathematics & Statistics
Semester 3: all modules of Semester 1 + 2
Semester 6: all modules of semester 3 + 4, General Studies
Semester 9: all modules of semester 5 - 7

Retakes of failed exams
First retake: at the end of the following Semester. (If a student fails an exam in the first semester the first retake needs to be done in the second semester)
Second retake: at the end of the semester that follows the first retake. (If a student fails an exam in the first semester the second retake needs to be done in the third semester)

If the retake is not taken to the binding deadlines and the absence lies in the responsibility of the student, the exam is considered as failed.

Retakes to improve the grade
In some cases students have the opportunity to improve their grade. There are application deadlines for this special kind of retake. It is very important to keep these deadlines!

Other requirements
Most of the exams of higher semesters can only be taken after exams of lower semesters are passed successfully. The following requirements have to be met:

Semester 5:
90 CPs from the first 4 semesters (students who spent semester 3 and 4 abroad can also use credits from semester 5.

Bachelor Thesis:
150 CPs, Successfully pass of the internship. (Exemptions are possible)

The study programme “International Management” offers students the opportunity to gain a second Bachelor´s degree from a selected partner university of the faculty of Business and Economics during their regular studies.
Based on a special bilateral agreement between the study programme International Management and a comparable study programme of a partner university, students spend one year (2 semesters) and earn 60 CP or an equivalent number of Credit Points at the partner university.
These 60 CP are fully acknowledged by the faculty and credited for the Bachelor´s degree as if they were taken at FHWS.
Students who fulfil all the regulations recorded in the bilateral agreement are also awarded with the Bachelor´s degree of the partner university after graduating from FHWS.

You can choose any two out of the following four focus in English language – listed under 2.23 to 2.26

  • Entrepreneurship & Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs)

Instead of the Englich focus you can choose one or two of the German focuses, as seen in §8 of Study and Examination Regulation Bachelor Betriebswirtschaftlehre too. In any case you have to combine the two parts a and b of the same Focus.
Note: You cannot enrol in the corresponding German TWIN module if you participate in a comparable course of the Bachelor International Management focus.
