Master Managing Global Dynamics

1. Inroduction

The study programme „Managing Global Dynamics“ is the answer of the faculty of business and economics to the growing demand for internationally integrated and educated graduates from the labour market. The programme is completely taught in English. Its practical orientation fits ideally into the concept of the University of Applied Sciences. Graduates of the programme meet the needs of international oriented small and medium sized companies as well as big corporations.

The targets of the programme are named in § 2 of the study and examination regulations (SPO).
The aim of the programme is to provide graduates of bachelor's and diploma programmes and equivalent programmes with in-depth, applied knowledge on a scientific basis that ena-bles them to act independently and responsibly in an international business environment, in particular through intercultural and interdisciplinary skills. The focus of the programme is on teaching a comprehensive, internationally oriented approach to business administration. The course of study should in particular enable students to develop agile entrepreneurial thinking in an environment that is constantly changing due to globalisation, in order to further develop this organisation in an economically, socially and ecologically sustainable manner. The special role of digitalisation with the core competencies mentioned above forms a central component of the training.
The programme provides a broad spectrum of skills that enable graduates to successfully succeed in internationally active institutions and organisations. In addition to specialist and social skills, current topics are dealt with, including, and in particular, digitalisation and inter-faces to other subject areas connected to business administration.

1.2 The Programme Managing Global Dynamics at a Glance

The study programme “Managing Global Dynamics” comprises 1.5 years (3 semesters). Within a modular structure 90 CP (around 30 CP – Credit Points per semester) can be achieved.
The modules can be assigned to the following topics:

  • Intercultural/ Interdisciplinary Management
  • Digital Innovations
  • Social/ Interpersonal Relations
  • Professional Research
  • Thesis

The following spreadsheet shows the credit points and the semester in which the module is offered.
There is no obligation to complete the module in the semester shown in the study plan. In or-der to the reasons listed below, the adherence to the study plan is highly recommended:

  • The study plan is adjusted to a workload of approximately 30 Credit Points per semester, which equals about 900 hours. Past experiences suggest, that an average student is not able to deal with a higher workload.
  • Modules are built upon.
  • The schedule, which is offered to the students every semester, is based on the study plan. Students are able to join the necessary lectures without collisions, if attended accordingly. Exemptions from the study plan may cause overlaps.
  • Some modules (especially in higher semesters) are only allowed to be studied after pass-ing specific regulations, like a default number of achieved Credit Points or specific sub-jects, that have to be passed in advance. Further information can be found in the study and examination regulation (SPO).
  • Modules of semester one are offered every winter term, modules of semester two every summer term, the research project should be offered in the winter term.
Module Overview Credit Points (ECTS)
Module Overview Hour per Week (SWS)

Credit Points (ECTS-points) are the units in which academic success is measured according to the Bologna System. To acquire a Master’s degree, students have to pass 60 – 120 ECTS-points. A Master’s degree requires 300 ECTS-points (undergraduate plus graduate level).
One Credit Point (ECTS-point) reflects a student workload of 30 hours.
One semester is usually scheduled with 30 ECTS-points, which means that students face a workload of 900 hours per semester.
The student workload consists of two parts:
Presence Part: Lectures and all other meetings in the University guided by a lecturer. There-fore, the presence part can be referred to as contact time or hours.
Self-study Part: Preparation and post-processing for upcoming lectures. Also the time stu-dents need to prepare for presentations, papers and exams.
The presence part is determined through (academic) hours/week during the semester (SWS). One academic hour equals lecture time of 60 min.
One semester is usually 15 weeks.
Therefore, a lecture with two academic hours (SWS) equals a presence part of:
15 lecture week’s × 2 hours = 30 real time hours
A lecture with 4 SWS means 60 hours

According to the study and examination regulations there is a deadline for taking certain ex-ams. The following deadlines are mandatory:

The following modules have to be taken for the first time at the end of:

Semester 2: all modules of Semester 1
Semester 3: all modules of Semester 1 + 2

Retakes of failed exams
First retake: at the end of the following Semester. (If a student fails an exam in the first se-mester the first retake needs to be done in the second semester)
Second retake: at the end of the semester that follows the first retake. (If a student fails an exam in the first semester the second retake needs to be done in the third semester)

If the retake is not taken to the binding deadlines and the absence lies in the responsibility of the student, the exam is considered as failed.

Retakes to improve the grade
In some cases students have the opportunity to improve their grade. There are application deadlines for this special kind of retake. It is very important to keep these deadlines!

Other requirements
Most of the exams of higher semesters can only be taken after exams of lower semesters are passed successfully. The following requirements have to be met:

Master Thesis: Minimum 40 ECTS-points have to be achieved for doing the Master Thesis.

The study programme “Managing Global Dynamics” requires students to spend a mandatory semester abroad. Students will therefore attend modules 7 to 10 in their second semester either at Universitá degli studi di Salerno (Italy) or Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu (Romania).
In order to ensure an equal acquisition of competencies according to the Lisbon Convention a consortium of two representatives of each participating university (FHWS, UNISA, ULBS) was founded. The consortium regularly evaluates the taught competencies of modules 7-10 guarantee a smoothly curriculum for all students of the programme.
